How to use the hours calculator
Enter your clock-in and clock-out times and any unpaid break in minutes. The calculator shows your total worked time in hours and minutes, the decimal-hours figure used on most timesheets, and — if you add your hourly rate — your estimated gross pay. Overnight shifts (where the end time is earlier than the start) are handled automatically.
The formula
Hours = (End − Start, +24h if overnight) − Break · Pay = Hours × rate
Worked example
Clock in 9:00, out 17:30, with a 30-minute unpaid break:
- Clock time: 8 hours 30 minutes
- Minus break: 8 hours worked (decimal 8.0 h)
- At a $20/hour rate: 8 × $20 = $160 gross
Decimal hours explained
Payroll systems usually use decimal hours, where 30 minutes is 0.5 and 15 minutes is 0.25. The calculator gives both formats so you can copy whichever your timesheet needs.
Common mistakes to avoid
Forgetting to subtract unpaid breaks. Entering an overnight shift and expecting a negative result (it correctly adds 24 hours). Assuming the pay figure includes overtime premiums or is after tax — it's a straight gross estimate.
Frequently asked questions
9:00 to 17:30 with a 30-min break — how many hours?
8.5 hours of clock time minus 0.5 break = 8 hours.
What are decimal hours?
