How to use the tip calculator
Enter your bill amount, tap a tip percentage (or type a custom one), and set how many people are splitting. The calculator shows the tip, the grand total, and how much each person owes — perfect for restaurants, cafés, taxis, and group outings.
The formulas
Tip = Bill × tip% ÷ 100 · Total = Bill + Tip · Each pays = Total ÷ people
Worked example
A $60 bill, 18% tip, split between 2 people:
- Tip: $60 × 18 ÷ 100 = $10.80
- Total: $70.80
- Each person pays: $35.40
How much to tip
Tipping customs vary widely. In the United States, 15–20% is typical for sit-down service (and the 18% default reflects that). In many other countries a smaller tip — or none — is normal, and service may already be included in the bill. Use the rate that matches local custom and the service you received.
Common mistakes to avoid
Tipping on the post-tax total when you meant pre-tax (it inflates the tip slightly). Forgetting that some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for large groups — check before adding more. Splitting evenly when one person ordered far more.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is common for table service. Elsewhere, follow local custom.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable; many people tip on the pre-tax total. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer.
Do I tip outside the US?
It varies — often a small tip or none, and service may be included. Tip to local custom.
Can it split unevenly?
This tool splits evenly. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share of the bill first.
What's a 20% tip on $60?
$12, for a $72 total — or $36 each between two people.
